An MSDS format is a template for organizing and composing an MSDS's textual content. The format determines the number of sections the MSDS contains, the product information covered by each section, and so forth. In DolphinRTK, each product revision can have a selected MSDS format to indicate the format of its MSDS. The product shows this selected MSDS format on its Primary Information display and on certain reports. You can also search for products of a specific format by browsing the product list by MSDS format.
Administrators manage MSDS formats by maintaining an up-to-date list of MSDS formats available for each product. For this list, IHS provides the following MSDS formats:
ANSI-OSHA: Format commonly used by US-produced MSDSs before the adoption of GHS (Globally Harmonized System) by OSHA (the US Occupational Safety & Health Administration). Primary hazard indicators: NFPA (US National Fire Protection Association) and HMIS (US Hazardous Materials Identification System) ratings.
AUS: Format used by Australia-produced MSDSs in the WorkSafe format. Primary hazard indicators: Australian Dangerous Goods classifications.
EU: Format used by EU-produced MSDSs before the adoption of GHS by the European Union. Primary hazard indicators: DSD/DPD (Dangerous Substances Directive / Dangerous Preparations Directive) hazard classifications.
GHS-EU: Format used by EU-produced MSDSs after the adoption of GHS by the European Union. Primary hazard indicators: GHS hazard classifications, including pictogram and signal word.
GHS-US: Format commonly used by US-produced MSDSs after the adoption of GHS by OSHA and the modification of the HazCom standard in 2012. Primary hazard indicators: GHS and HNOC (Hazardous Not Otherwise Classified) hazard classifications; however, HMIS and NFPA ratings are likely to remain on the MSDS at least through the transition period.
WHMIS: Format used by Canada-produced MSDSs. Primary hazard indicators: WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) classifications.
No Format Specified: The setting for any MSDS of an unknown or unspecified format. When an administrator deletes an MSDS format in DolphinRTK, all MSDSs of the deleted format revert to this setting.
When your products require MSDS formats in addition to those listed above, you can add, rename, and delete those additional formats as needed. For details on these operations, see the following:
